Hurricanes Since 1851
Hurricane map using south pole stereographic projection
I made this map, but it is not original to me. It is original to John Nelson who created it for National Geographic and has since published the cook book steps to recreate this wonder. Follow along here to create your own bit of National Geographic magic: https://links.esri.com/HowToHurricaneMap
Natural Habitats Around Cape Cod
Potential anadromous fish presence associated with eelgrass habitat
Bringing in layers from ArcGIS Online, I made a large scale map of Cape Cod featuring locations of eelgrass habitat and anadromous fish (fish that swim upstream from the sea to spawn like salmon). I wanted to see if there was a correlation between eelgrass habitat along the coast (teal polygons) and where anadromous fish (blue points along streams) might find choice habitat for protection and rearing young once they spawn upstream in fresh water and find their way to the sea. I also wanted to show the locations of protected lands (green polygons) relative to fish and eelgrass habitats. I added in the "Oceans" basemap and turned off the labels. I also wanted to eliminate as many human made structures as I could so that the natural world would take center stage. Lastly, I added in an inset map with the state of Massachusetts and a rectangle around the area of interest.

Comparing Classification Methods in ArcGIS Pro
UK election results classified by winning factor
This collage of maps shows 4 methods (3 classed, 1 unclassed) of presenting the 2015 UK election results showing the wining factor that the first place Member of Parliament won over the second place opponent. Fascinatingly, these maps all show the exact same data, but in very different ways possibly delivering different messages. Although it makes for a nice-looking map, the quantile method doesn't show enough information. The equal interval method works fairly with well this dataset, but I preferred manually setting the intervals by a factor of 1 to see even more nuances in the data. I think the unclassed method shows very similar results to the manual interval method so it could be a decent presentation of the results as well.

This map shows a unique perspective of our world - from the point of view of the great oceans. The Spilhaus Ocean Map In Square projection was developed in the 1970s by a South African geophysicist/oceanographer and several workers from the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey. I added a world coral reef and atoll layer from Natural Earth. Finally, I styled the ocean labels to have an illuminated effect as well as applied a scientific color scheme to enrich the bathymetry layer.

Fourmile Watershed Coalition Interactive Web Map
The purpose of this project was to develop an interactive web mapping application of damaged bridges and culverts from the 2013 Front Range floods as part of a volunteer project for the Fourmile Watershed Coalition in Boulder County, Colorado. A link to my custom web map is also published at GitHub Pages: https://vanessajo.github.io/resilient_crossings/
Tillamook Cheese Visitor's Center Suitability Analysis
The purpose of this project was 2-fold: 1) to conduct a spatial analysis for determining a suitable location to construct the new, state of the art, Tillamook Cheese Visitor’s Center, set to have a grand opening in 2018 and 2) to incorporate major geological hazards in the process of this analysis.
